Portrait of a Donor: the Estate of Dorothy R. Stowell
Dorothy R. Stowell was a resident of Hendersonville from the
late 1960’s until 1992 when she moved to Tryon Estates
in Columbus. A graduate of the University of Illinois she earned
her B.A. in literature and languages and her master’s
degree and Ph.D. in French.
Mrs. Stowell was a gift and a treasure to all who knew her.
Prior to World War II, her early career included serving as
professor of French, English and Spanish at the University
of Illinois. During the war, her linguistic talents were deployed
in service to the country via the War Department’s Chicago
Office as a mail censor.
She and her first husband, Francis “Mike” Daggett,
moved to Hendersonville in the 1960’s. Dorothy quickly
became active as a volunteer in the Auxiliary of Pardee Hospital.
After her husband’s death she devoted even more of her
time to her volunteer work.
In 1971, Dorothy married George F. Stowell, a prominent member
of the Hendersonville community and chairman of the board of
Pardee Hospital. They enjoyed travel and antique pottery collecting,
but most of all continuing to serve the community in various
philanthropic ways.
When not occupied in formal charitable activities, Dorothy
spread cheer through delivering home baked goods and pastries
to her friends and acquaintances and visiting with residents
in nursing care facilities. Her bright smile, twinkling eyes,
and extensive appreciation of life made her a welcome visitor.
