The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Pardee offers a variety of education and prevention programs at the Pardee Health Education Center in the Blue Ridge Mall. Presentations and screenings are held throughout the year on numerous types of cancer, including breast, prostate, skin and colorectal. The Pardee Health Education Center has a cancer resource room, a private fitting room that allows women undergoing cancer treatment to find the right wig, prosthesis, turban, scarf, mastectomy bra or hat at no charge. Support groups to help patients and their families cope with cancer are also available. For more information on the programs offered at the Pardee Health Education Center, call 828-692-4600.
Pardee understands the importance of prevention in a community cancer program and offers residents of Western North Carolina the opportunity to participate in the latest cancer trial studies to help find a cure for the disease.
The most recent trials conducted at Pardee include STAR and SELECT, both sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.
In STAR, two drugs - tamoxifen and raloxifene - were compared for their effectiveness in reducing the occurrence of breast cancer in postmenopausal women age 35 or older who are at increased risk for the disease. More than 19,000 women participated in this trial, which is one of the largest breast cancer prevention studies ever. For more information, visit the STAR website.
In SELECT, researchers tried to determine if taking selenium and/or vitamin E supplements can prevent prostate cancer. More than 35,000 men from a variety of ethnic groups, including African American, Hispanic and Asian, participated in the trial. The study was coordinated by a group of researchers known as the Southwest Oncology Group. For more information, visit the SELECT website.
