Hendersonville is located in Western North Carolina, 22 miles south of Asheville, NC. Encompassing a 375 square-mile area, Henderson County is part of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area in the Blue Ridge mountains. Incorporated in 1838, Henderson County is 375 square miles and consists of five municipalities with elected officials; the city of Hendersonville, the village of Flat Rock, the town of Fletcher, the town of Laurel Park and the town of Mills River. The county is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners elected to a term of four years. A chairman is elected by the Board of Commissioners. The county has a full-time administrator.
The city of Hendersonville encompasses 5.32 square miles. It has a Mayor-Council form of government. Council members are nominated and elected from the city-at-large for a period of four years. The mayor is elected from the city-at-large for a period of four years.
Downtown Hendersonville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Thriving businesses such as specialty shops, antique stores and restaurants offer something for all ages. Downtown hosts many activities including the NC Apple Festival, art shows, street dances, the annual Garden Jubilee and parades throughout the year.
Hendersonville has remained a popular summer resort area for more than 100 years. Today, the area attracts a diverse population of residents with interests ranging from career advancement, to arts and outdoor recreation, to those in their retirement years. The county’s temperate climate with four distinct, yet moderate seasons, offers beauty, variety and year-round golf. Henderson County's cultural opportunities are varied and rich, ranging from dramatic offerings at Flat Rock Playhouse (The State Theater of North Carolina) to culinary and entertainment treats at the annual N.
