60 Years of Caring

On November 15, 1953, Pardee Hospital officially opened to the public. From the start, Pardee was committed to providing the best and most modern medical care to the people of Henderson County. On opening day, 28 patients were transferred from Patton Hospital to Pardee with Dottie Keith being the first patient. The first baby born at the hospital was aptly named Margaret Pardee Vaughn. Within two years, Pardee had quickly set a standard for innovation and a commitment to quality. In 1954, Pardee was recognized as a Secondary Premature Infant Center. Within another year, Pardee opened the first poison control center in western North Carolina. Four years later a 30 bed addition was completed to answer the growing demand for quality health care. Pardee quickly grew to become a major health care provider in western North Carolina within its first six years of existence.
Although growth of the facility and programs were important at Pardee, the team members, physicians and volunteers were even more instrumental to the success. As William Jamison, the first hospital administrator, said, “Equipment is an important factor in good health care, for the patients of Pardee hospital. But the equipment remains mere tools that need skilled hands of dedicated people who care about patients.” Sixty years later, this sentiment still rings true in our dedicated team members. Pardee continues to attract team members and physicians provide quality patient centered care to Henderson County.

Pardee Hospital Awarded “A” Grade by Hospital Safety Score

Pardee Hospital has again been recognized with an “A” grade in the Fall 2013 update to the Hospital Safety Score, which rates hospital safety based on outcomes from medical treatment. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group (Leapfrog), an independent industry watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be analyzed in the peer-reviewed Journal of Patient Safety, the Score is designed to give the public information they can use to ensure the highest level of medical safety for themselves and their families.

“Receiving this top ranking a second time in a row is a testament to the continued improvement of quality, safety and commitment to compassionate care at Pardee Hospital,” said Jay Kirby, President and CEO, Pardee Hospital.

“Pardee Hospital consistently has been recognized by numerous organizations for its outstanding clinical quality and patient safety. The LeapFrog Hospital Safety Score is an independent composite safety rating developed by a panel of national patient safety experts. The intent is to provide health care professionals and health care consumers with a standardized method for comparing safety performance among various general acute care hospitals. Less than one-third of the over 2,600 hospitals in the United States receive an A rated safety score. Pardee Hospital is pleased to receive this highest recognition by the Leapfrog Group as an affirmation of the hospital’s commitment to health care excellence,” said Robert Kiskaddon, M.D., FACEP, Chief Medical Officer, Vice President Medical Affairs, Pardee Hospital.

“As patients begin to take a more active role in selecting where to receive health care, it has never been more important to focus on hospital safety and transparency. The ‘A’ hospitals, including Pardee Hospital, are helping us to raise the standards of health care nationwide,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of Leapfrog. “We offer our congratulations and hope Pardee Hospital will continue to strive for an ever-increasing level of excellence in patient safety.”

To see Pardee Hospital’s scores as they compare nationally and locally, and to find safety tips for patients and their loved ones, visit the Hospital Safety Score website at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org. Local hospitals’ scores are also available on the free mobile app, available at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org.

Calculated under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 general U.S. hospitals were assigned scores this Fall. A full analysis of the data and methodology used is available on the Hospital Safety Score website.

The Leapfrog Group (www.leapfroggroup.org) is a national nonprofit organization using the collective leverage of large purchasers of health care to initiate breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of health care for Americans. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey allows purchasers to structure their contracts and purchasing to reward the highest performing hospitals. The Leapfrog Group was founded in November 2000 with support from the Business Roundtable and national funders and is now independently operated with support from its purchaser and other members.

Pardee Hospital is a not-for-profit community hospital founded in 1953 and is managed by UNC Health Care. It is the first and only hospital in North Carolina to be accredited with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 9001:2008) for quality health care standards. The hospital is licensed for 222 acute care beds and is the second largest employer in Henderson County. The hospital has several locations separate from the main campus, including a comprehensive physician practice network.
