15th Annual Tournament of Champions a Success

The 15th Annual Pardee Foundation Tournament of Champions took place on Monday, May 17, at Kenmure Golf and Country Club. The event raised $93,236.88 to assist with the planned renovations to Pardee Hospital’s nationally recognized orthopedic unit. This year’s event featured a new 9-hole tournament in the morning with 27 golfers, followed by the traditional 18-hole tournament in the afternoon with a full field of 130 players. More than 40 volunteers ensured that the event ran smoothly. This event has raised more than $1 million since 1996 to support Pardee Hospital facilities, equipment and programs. Proceeds from the tournament will help fund planned renovations to Pardee’s orthopedic unit which is consistently benchmarked among other top orthopedic programs in the nation. These renovations include upgrades to the current 25 patient rooms and the addition of five patient rooms, enlargement of group therapy space, equipment purchases for orthopedic surgeries and a new conference area. All of these renovations will support the growth in orthopedic and spine procedures to address the growing needs of our community. Gladys Nesbitt, nursing director of orthopedics at Pardee Hospital, said, “As the number of patients in our Joint Camp program has steadily increased, it has become readily apparent that our facilities at Pardee need to be expanded and renovated. These changes will allow us to offer even more services to patients who chose our destination for their surgical needs.” Thank you to the many sponsors, volunteers, committee members, golfers, and staff who made this event such a great success. Pardee Hospital Foundation Donors are Making Their Rounds

[caption id="attachment_271" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Generations of Excellence donors tour the operating room with Eileen Stepp."][/caption] On Monday, February 8, a group of Pardee Hospital Foundation donors took part in the first ever “Making Rounds” tour of the orthopedic unit and even experienced a trip to the operating room to view a live surgery. The donors were each members of the Foundation’s Generations of Excellence Society. The tour was created as a way for Pardee Hospital Foundation donors to get a look at what goes on behind the scenes at Pardee. This tour specifically focused on the orthopedic unit where the donors in attendance where able to see equipment that their previous donations had purchased as well as learn about the needs in the current orthopedic renovation. Dr. Amal K. Das, Jr. allowed the group into his operating room for a once-in-a-lifetime sneak peek at a joint replacement surgery. Howard Carl, Jr., a member of the Pardee Hospital Foundation Finance Committee, was particularly interested in this surgery as he had previously had a similar joint replacement surgery. “One of the most amazing things to me was learning how much money was needed for all of the equipment utilized during surgery,” Carl said after seeing all of the state-of-the-art equipment used during joint replacements. Generation's donor, Stan Massie, was fascinated while watching the live surgery, “I loved it, if I could have stayed for the entire surgery, I would have.” The tour was guided by Debbie Patrick, director of development for the Pardee Hospital Foundation and Eileen Stepp, nursing director of Surgical Services. Future Making Rounds tours are planned for dates throughout this year, if you would be interested in attending, contact the Pardee Hospital Foundation at (828) 696-4666.
