Pardee Signature Care Center, Hendersonville Fire Department and Safe Kids WNC is holding car seat inspections Monday July 28, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. at the Blue Ridge Mall. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will perform inspections and train parents and caregivers to install and adjust their car seats properly.
"Think of it as a private lesson in the correct use of your car seat," says Vickie Killough, Safe Kids WNC coordinator.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of children under 14. "Under North Carolina law, all children under the age of eight and 80 pounds must be restrained in an appropriate child safety seat — whether in the family car, traveling with friends or relatives, or in a rental car or taxi," says Killough.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 73 percent of all child passenger restraints — more than 80 percent of car seats and about 40 percent of booster seats — are used incorrectly. "It's a parent's responsibility to make sure a child's car seat is properly installed and adjusted. We're here to show you how. In a crash, a child restrained incorrectly is 3.5 times more likely to be seriously injured than a child who is properly restrained," says Killough.
The Blue Ridge Mall is located on Four Seasons Boulevard in Hendersonville. Inspections are being held on a drop-in basis.
Safe Kids WNC provides car seat inspections throughout the year as well. To find additional car seat inspection sites or certified technicians near you, call (828) 213-5548 or visit www.safekids.org. An inspection is free and usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. Bring children and the owner's manuals for vehicle and designated car seats.
Safe Kids WNC is part of Safe Kids Worldwide, the first and only national nonprofit organization dedicated solely to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury — the number one killer of children ages 14 and under. More than 300 state and local Safe Kids coalitions in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico make up the Campaign. Safe Kids WNC is led by Mission Children's Hospital in Asheville, NC.
