Mountain Medley Triathlon presented by Pardee Hospital

Housing Assistance and Mainstay, along with Pardee Hospital, is excited to offer the Mountain Medley Triathlon Saturday, Sept. 8, at Camp Green Cove at Lake Summit.   The Mountain Medley Triathlon begins at 9 a.m. and includes an 800m swim, 6 miles of off road mountain biking and finishing with a 10k run. Shelley Case, RD, internationally recognized expert on Celiac disease, visits the Pardee Health Education Center

Shelley Case, RD, an internationally recognized expert on Celiac disease and the gluten-free diet, will visit the Celiac Support Group on Wednesday, June 13, from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. at the Pardee Health Education Center, located in the Blue Ridge Mall. Case will present “Celiac Disease, Gluten Sensitivity and The Gluten-Free Diet: What Everyone Needs to Know.” She is a member of the Medical Advisory Boards of the Celiac Disease Foundation, Gluten Intolerance Group and Canadian Celiac Association. Her national best seller Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide is highly recommended by health professionals, celiac organizations, consumers, food industry and the media. Leah McGrath, Ingles Dietitian, visits Diabetes Support Group at Pardee Health Education Center

Leah McGrath, Ingles Dietitian, will visit the Diabetes Support Group on Wednesday, May 16, from 10 – 11:30 a.m. at the Pardee Health Education Center, located in the Blue Ridge Mall. “I always look forward to working with Pardee Hospital's Certified Diabetes Educator, Nina Lovern, and the support group. This support group and the diabetes education classes are a tremendous resource for the community to help individuals with diabetes understand more about the disease and how to stay healthy. I'll be doing a presentation on "What's New at Ingles?" which will give participants a chance to sample and rate products that are new in-store,” says Leah McGrath, Corporate Dietitian for Ingles Markets. McGrath will educate attendees on food choices and how they effect diabetics. Although this program is free, registration is required by calling 1-866-790-WELL (9355). Pardee Hospital to host community blood drive

Pardee Hospital will host a community blood drive on Wednesday, June 6, from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Jamison Conference Room, located on the first floor. In order to donate blood, one must be healthy, at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more, and not have donated blood in the past 56 days. Walk-in donors will be accepted, but those with appointments will be seen first. Weight-Loss Tips to Help You Lose Lighten Up 4 Life Weight-Loss Tips Avoid high-fat meals Keep an eye out for meals that use the following words in their description: Au Gratin,  Parmigianino, Tempura, Alfredo, creamy and Carbonara, because these descriptions usually mean ”high-fat" content: Be mindful when you are eating Pay attention to what you are putting in your mouth. In other words, sit down and pay attention to the food you are eating. Really enjoy each and every bite.  If you're watching TV or working while you eat, you won't pay attention to what's going into your mouth and you might eat more than you should and enjoy it less! Drink more water Drink water instead of grabbing for a high-fat snack. Drinking six to eight glasses a day will help fill you up and help your waistline. Ask for a "doggie-bag" before you eat Ask your waiter for a take-home box before you begin to eat your restaurant meal and put half of your main course into the take-home box. Putting the food away before you start your meal will help you eat a more sensible portion and you'll have leftovers to take home for tomorrow. Leave something on your plate Challenge yourself to leave half of your sandwich on your plate, remove the bun from your burger or eat only half your spaghetti and meatballs. You might find out that you are satisfied eating only half-of-a- portion and not to consume the rest of your meal. And most of all; Exercise, Exercise, Exercise! If you’ve been following our tips, you know that in addition to eating the appropriate amount of calories, increasing your exercise activity can be the key to helping you lose weight.  In fact, a Duke University study suggests that you should walk for 45 minutes a day. The study found that “while 30 minutes of daily walking is enough to prevent weight gain in most relatively sedentary people, exercise beyond 30 minutes results in weight and fat loss. Evidently walking 45 minutes can burn an additional 300 calories a day which could help you lose 30 pounds in a year without even changing how much you’re eating.
