100 Years Old and Going Strong!

[caption id="attachment_129" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Boyd Campbell Working Out at Pardee Rehab"][/caption] Boyd Campbell celebrated his 100th birthday a few days ago.  How often can you tell someone that they don’t look a day over 80 and it be a compliment?  I had the honor to meet with Mr. Campbell this week.  He still works out three times a week at the Pardee Rehab & Wellness Center.  “When the weather is nice, I try to get a couple swims in each week too,” said Campbell.  I asked him his secret for health and longevity.  “I worked pretty much my whole life.  I stayed active and never smoked.”  Sounds simple doesn’t it?  Sure makes me feel guilty for getting only one work-out this week!  Mr. Campbell shared some of his amazing story with me.  He received his bachelor’s degree in Horticulture in 1935 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.  1935!  That’s before World War II!  He smiles when I make note of that fact and mentions that he raised apples and children for many years in Taylorsville, N.C. before moving to Hendersonville in 1970.  He got involved with Masters swimming from a friend that is a few years his senior.  Yes, older than him!  He is an active member of the local YMCA and has won a bunch of medals in swimming over the past 25 years.  He and his wife Rosalind will be celebrating their 70th anniversary in a few months.  They have six children, 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.  I could quickly tell by his interactions with the staff and other people exercising at Pardee Rehab that he was very well liked.  At the end of the interview I said my goodbyes and felt a just a little better about the world. -CJP
