Three UNC Health Hospitals Earn Top 5-Star Ratings from CMS

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, UNC Health Rex in Raleigh and UNC Health Pardee in Hendersonville have received top 5-Star ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which measures hospital quality and safety to help consumers make informed choices.

The latest CMS hospital ratings, which were recently posted on the CMS website, use a wide range of publicly available data in categories that include mortality, safety of care, readmissions, timely and effective care, and patient experience. CMS provides star ratings to help patients make decisions about where to get the best health care and encourage hospitals to improve the quality of care they provide.

Across the country, only 290 hospitals earned 5-Star status, including eight in North Carolina, according to CMS. UNC Health is the only system in North Carolina with multiple 5-star hospitals.

Among UNC Health hospitals:

  • UNC Hospitals maintained its 5-Star rating
  • UNC Health Rex maintained its 5-Star rating
  • UNC Health Pardee maintained its 5-Star rating

“We are proud that UNC Health Rex, UNC Hospitals and UNC Health Pardee received such outstanding recognition from CMS,” said Dr. Cristy Page, interim CEO of UNC Health. “Faced with the ever-shifting landscape of healthcare, this remarkable achievement reflects our teammate’s commitment to serving our families, friends, and neighbors.”

“The ratings are based on rigorous national benchmarks across five key areas: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care,” said Dr. Peggy McNaull, UNC Health’s chief medical and quality officer. “This recognition is a testament to the strength of our culture, the excellence of our clinical teams, and the power of our shared purpose in fulfilling our mission.”
