ALS Clinic
UNC Health Pardee has opened the first and only ALS Clinic in Western North Carolina. While Pardee has long cared for patients with ALS – a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord – this new clinic represents a more specialized and coordinated approach by bringing focused expertise and a multidisciplinary team to support the unique needs of individuals living with the disease.
About the Clinic
The clinic focuses on the treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and is designed to provide patients and families with a comprehensive, one-visit experience, allowing them to meet with the full care team in a single day. This collaborative model ensures that patients with ALS receive coordinated, compassionate, and highly specialized care tailored to their unique needs.
The ALS Clinic is located at Pardee Neurology Associates, 2775 Hendersonville Rd., Suite 250, in Arden, NC.
Our Multidisciplinary Team
Dr. Hannah Machemehl, a neuromuscular neurologist with specialized training and experience in the care and management of ALS, will lead the clinic, and is supported by Dr. Ben Rardin, who is fellowship-trained in neuromuscular medicine.
The clinic also includes a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including:
- Neurology
- Physical Therapy (PT)
- Occupational Therapy (OT)
- Speech Therapy
- Nutrition
- Respiratory Therapy
- Social Work
Why Pardee?
Pardee’s ALS Clinic is made possible through a grant from the ALS Association’s Hoffman ALS Clinic Development Awards program. The launch of this clinic represents Pardee's commitment to providing a continuum of care for patients and a significant milestone in bringing expert, patient-centered care to WNC.
As of 2025, it’s estimated that over 130 patients with ALS in Western NC currently must travel more than 90 minutes for care. This comprehensive approach ensures patients receive holistic support at every stage of their condition, without the burden of traveling long distances for care.
