What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a condition where fluid builds up, typically in your arms and legs. This occurs when some of your lymph nodes, which filter fluid through your body aren’t working well. Lymphedema can make your limbs feel heavy, itchy, and stiff. Your skin can feel hard and get irritated. Lymphedema can be caused by:
- Cancer
- Surgery or radiation treatment
- Kidney or heart problems
- A traumatic injury, like a car accident
- An infection
- A genetic condition
Treatments Available
It is our goal to help your patients’ gain independence with managing lymphedema by reducing swelling, discomfort, and other symptoms and keeping them from getting worse. Your lymphedema therapist will build a customized treatment plan specific to your needs. Many people feel better and can be more mobile after just a few treatments.
Treatments include:
- Manual lymphatic drainage
- Patient education on reducing the risk of lymphedema
- Exercises
- Compression garments
- Pneumatic compression pumps
- Dry needling for scar management and improved muscle function
Through these treatment techniques, we can help patients reduce any current signs of lymphedema and improve their ability to manage lymphedema at home.
