Preparing for Orthopedic Surgery
If you must undergo orthopedic surgery, here’s what to expect:
Pre-Admission Evaluation
Before your scheduled surgery date, a registered nurse will interview you, discuss your medical history, give instructions specific to your scheduled surgery or procedure, and will inform you of what to expect during your recovery. You will also learn if you will require the use of a mobility aid, such as crutches or a walker, following your surgery. Your surgeon’s office will arrange any training or instruction you need on how to use these aids.
Preparing for Surgery
After the evaluation, you will be instructed on precautions and care for the days leading up to your surgery. This will include how to arrive and depart from the hospital, as well as what to eat and what medications to take. You will also be instructed on what to wear and bring to the hospital the day of your surgery.
On the Day of Surgery
When you arrive at the hospital at your scheduled time prior to surgery, you will sign in, register and be led by a nurse through the pre-operative process.
Recovery
After your surgery, you will be taken to a recovery area where nurses will monitor your condition. Upon your return home, you will have instructions on how to care for yourself through the stages of recovery.
