Barbara Alexander

Administrative Assistant, Spiritual Care Services
Happy with Pardee since 2015

Where are you from?

Leicester, NC (yes, it’s LESTER!)

Why did you choose to work in health care?

I was fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom until my daughter started school and my son was almost two. I began exploring options where I could use my experience and training, and, having been an administrative assistant at the American Red Cross, I was drawn to the health care field. I worked at a large hospital, in the Health Information Management Department, and became very interested in the spiritual needs of patients, in addition to their medical needs.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

When I come through the doors at Pardee, I am greeted with a smile and “good morning” from a security team member. I print the census report and contact patients who have a religion listed and ask if they want their church contacted. This is very well-received by patients. I interact with volunteer chaplains and community clergy on a daily basis. I provide support to our staff chaplains, as well as the Volunteer Services Department. I never know what my day will be like; nothing is “normal” in spiritual care. Sometimes there’s an emergency and I need to contact my manager, or a volunteer chaplain. I am a notary and have become quite popular with the hospital staff, medical staff, visitors and patients. I manage the on-call schedule, help with the junior volunteer program, annual appreciation dinners and a variety of other tasks and projects.

What do you enjoy most about working at Pardee?

The friendliness of every team member [with whom] I come into contact. Patients are the top priority and it is evident by the care and attention they receive.

What is a surprising fact about yourself?

I am a twin, not identical, but our names do rhyme. Barbara Kay and Billy Ray!
