Where are you from?
Hendersonville, NC
Why did you choose to work in health care?
My desire to become a nurse came from my own personal experiences and challenges at a young age. At 17, I became a teen mother. When I think back to my labor experience, I distinctly remember the nurse who took care of me. She was an advocate for me when I felt like I didn't have a voice. Ever since that day, I knew that I wanted to be that person for other people who may be in those vulnerable situations.
In 2011, I did a newspaper article for the local paper about my life as a teen mother. In the article, I spoke about the same nurse and how it was also my dream to become a nurse in labor and delivery. One of my Pardee teammates happened to find the old article in her home recently. The article is currently displayed in the Women and Children’s Center, and it's amazing to see how far I've come since then.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
A typical day starts out with getting a report from my team. My assignment for the day may consist of being the primary nurse for a patient in labor or caring for a postpartum mother and her newborn. I am also privileged to be able to care for gynecological patients which may include patients in the postoperative phase of care after a mastectomy or hysterectomy. Our unit is so versatile that I also care for pediatric patients. One of the reasons I love working on our unit is because there is so much variety in what a typical day can look like.
What do you enjoy most about working at Pardee?
One of the best things, hands down, is the people that I get to work with. I spend a lot of time with my Pardee teammates.
We are privileged to be a part of someone's birth story. For most patients, this can be the happiest time of their lives but unfortunately, that is not the case for everyone. I am so lucky to have people who support me and have my back even through the difficult situations. These women have changed my life and I wouldn't be the nurse that I am without them.
What is a surprising fact about yourself?
I was born right here at Pardee in room 214! It really has been such a full-circle moment for me to be able to work and care for patients in the same place where I was born.
