Why did you choose to work in health care?

As a young girl, I bandaged up every stuffed animal, pet, and family member, even when they didn't need it. I always picked the runts of litters of puppies to nurse them back to health. I've always been interested in helping people get better and then stay well. 

What does a typical workday look like for you?

Upon arrival, I check the daily patient schedule, make assignments on the snap board, check provider referral messages, and follow up on immediate needs from staff and transplant doctors.

I oversee the Ambulatory Infusions (AMP) work queue where referrals come in after a therapy plan is created by a provider. I then communicate with our pre-arrival department about appointments. I’m known as an EPIC Superuser, so I am involved with meetings involving technology upgrades. When staffing is critical, I also help with rooming patients, obtaining labs, and therapy plans.

I also help to precept new nursing graduates and teach protocol to RNs.

What do you enjoy most about working at Pardee?

The most rewarding benefit of working at Pardee is the fell that everyone knows everyone. We are kin. We are neighbors. We attend church together. We've worked together before. Pardee offers many advanced services and specialty providers in this area, right where we live.

In my department, patients return again and again for treatments and begin to treat the nurses like family. We know how much creamer to put in their coffee and how many pillows they like. 

What is an interesting fact about yourself?

While waiting to take my state board exam, I worked as a CNA and remember the importance of a mentor early in my career. Steve Foster, RN, was my greatest supporter. He was the charge nurse on 3A at that time and, incidentally, he still works at Pardee in Case Management. I try to pay it forward by serving as a preceptor for new nursing graduates, helping to prepare the next generation of Pardee caregivers.
