Important Update on Medicare Advantage Coverage

As of Jan. 1, 2026, UNC Health is no longer in-network with the following Medicare Advantage plans:

  • Humana
  • WellCare
  • Health Care Service Corporation (formerly Cigna)

We know these changes can be confusing. You are not alone. We are here to support you and help you keep the care you trust.

Good News for State Health Plan Retirees

If you have Humana coverage through the NC State Health Plan (SHP), nothing is changing:

  • You will still have full access to UNC Health.
  • Your costs and care will not change.
  • No action is required.

If You’re Affected

If you’re enrolled in Humana, WellCare, or Health Care Service Corporation Medicare Advantage (not through SHP):

  • Your coverage went out of network with UNC Health on Dec. 31, 2025.
  • If you want to keep your UNC Health doctors, you may be able to make a change between Jan. 1 and Mar. 31, 2026. During this time, you can switch to Original Medicare or select a Medicare Advantage plan that includes UNC Health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chapter a free service?

Yes. Chapter’s services are always free for patients.

Why should I trust Chapter?

Chapter is the only Medicare Advisor that compares every plan from every insurance carrier. Plus, Chapter Advisors are paid the same, regardless of which plan the patient chooses. Their only incentive is to find the best plan for each patient.

What types of plans does Chapter recommend?

Chapter recommends all Medicare plans. This includes Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans, Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, and Part D Prescription Drug plans. Chapter also helps with Original Medicare sign-up and coverage (Parts A & B).

How does Chapter make money?

Like most Medicare Advisors, Chapter earns commissions from insurance carriers when they enroll someone into a plan. Unlike most Medicare Advisors, Chapter will recommend plans that do not pay them, and Chapter’s advisors are not paid more or less based on plans they recommend.

What is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan?

Medicare Supplement plans sit on top of Original Medicare and cover much of the 20 percent of costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover. With a Medicare Supplement plan, you can see any doctor that accepts Medicare.
